Life of Christ Ahnsahnghong[3]

Born in 1918

Christ Ahnsahnghong was born on January 13, 1918 in Myeongdeok-ri, Jangye-myeon, Jangsu-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Republic of Korea (hereinafter referred to as “South Korea”).

In 1918, the world was in great chaos. During World War I (1914-1918), one of the deadliest conflicts in human history, an estimated 20 million people died.[5] Immediately following the end of the war, the world trembled with fear as the Spanish flu, the worst pandemic of the 20th century, spread throughout the world. Massive military requisitions and troop movements during World War I caused the flu to become a global pandemic leaving an estimated 50 to 100 million people dead. According to statistics taken in 1918, among 17.6 million people living on the Korean peninsula, an estimated 2.9 million were infected with the flu, while 140,000 of them died.[6][7]

Simultaneously, Korea was suffering from extreme poverty and severe food shortages after Japan, having deprived Korea of its sovereignty in 1910, exploited rice production. In 1939 as Japanese oppression reached its peak, World War II (1939–1945) broke out, causing unprecedented destruction. It is estimated that the death toll from World War II reached 55 million.[8] Imperial Japan, an Axis power, plundered Korean military supplies and forcibly mobilized Koreans for war.[9] In a time when there was neither peace nor freedom, Christ Ahnsahnghong was born, grew up, and suffered in this dark period of human history only for the salvation of mankind.[10]

Baptized in 1948

The Year of Israel’s Independence

Christ Ahnsahnghong was baptized in 1948 when Israel, which was likened to the fig tree, became independent, and began His gospel ministry.
Christ Ahnsahnghong was baptized in 1948 when Israel, which was likened to the fig tree, became independent, and began His gospel ministry.

On December 16, 1948, Christ Ahnsahnghong was baptized on Nakseom Island, (present Yonghyeon-dong, Michuhol-gu), Incheon, South Korea.
By getting baptized in 1948 at the age of 30, He fulfilled the prophecy of King David in the Bible. Miraculously in 1948, Israel gained its independence after disappearing from history for about 1,900 years. Israel’s independence was the sign of Christ’s return according to the parable of the fig tree. Christ, who comes as King David, must be baptized at the age of 30, just as David became king at the age of 30. In 1948, Christ Ahnsahnghong was baptized at the age of 30 and began His ministry.
The year 1948 is significant in the history of Korea as well. In 1945, Korea regained its sovereignty that had been lost to Imperial Japan; however, the South Korean government was officially formed in 1948 after the constitution was declared. Spiritually, 1948 was a historic year when the truth, which had been hidden under false doctrines since the time of the Apostolic Age, was discovered with the advent of Ahnsahnghong the Christ who came a second time.

Beginning of the Complete Reformation

All the truths of the early Church disappeared during the Dark Ages; only the truth of the Sabbath was vaguely revealed by the time of Christ Ahnsahnghong’s baptism. In 1947, Christ Ahnsahnghong entered the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which kept the Sabbath, not Sunday worship, and was baptized the following year when He turned 30 years old. His baptism in the Seventh-day Adventist Church was the fulfillment of the prophecy of the church in Laodicea: “The Son of Man stands at the door and knocks.”[11]
Christ Ahnsahnghong pointed out the errors of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and taught the truth about the soul, biblical regulations on food, and the perfect Sabbath. From that time, He made every effort to complete religious reformation by correcting the doctrines of existing churches that lost the commandments of God.[12]

37-Year Ministry

David’s 40-year reign was a prophecy to testify to the number of years of Christ’s public ministry. Jesus carried out His ministry for three years. The remaining 37 years were to be fulfilled by Second Coming Christ. Since His baptism in 1948 at the age of 30, Christ Ahnsahnghong dedicated Himself to the restoration of the truth of the new covenant and to the salvation of mankind until 1985 when He completed the prophecy of the 37-year ministry of Second Coming Christ.[13]

Outbreak of the Korean War

In 1950, the Korean War broke out. North Korean troops crossed the 38th parallel early in the morning of June 25, and soon occupied Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Pushing southward, they swept through downtown Daejeon within a month, and occupied Daegu, Masan, Pohang, followed by an advance towards Busan. However, the North Korean army failed to capture Busan due to a counterattack led by South Korean and UN forces. The North Korean army began their retreat from South Korea in September. In 1953, a ceasefire was called. Following decades of Japanese colonization and years of war, the land of Korea was devastated. The Korean War destroyed about 600,000 homes and left behind 200,000 war widows and 100,000 orphans. Over 45% of industrial facilities became inoperative, and the economy collapsed.[14]
In those days, Christ Ahnsahnghong was preaching the gospel of the new covenant in Busan. Even in such a poor and devastating situation, He kept God’s commands wholeheartedly. In His notebook, He wrote about the situation of those days: “Even despite deadly suffering during the Korean War and all the hard labor in the mountains of Byeonnae, Yangsan, I never gave in to the temptations of this life, nor did I violate the Sabbath in My workplace.”

Christ Ahnsahnghong established the Church of God in Haeundae-gu, Busan, South Korea, in 1964. He restored the early Church, which Jesus Himself established 2,000 years ago, and where the apostles kept the truth of the new covenant.
At that time, Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. In 1960, the gross national income [GNI] per capita was $1,167 (approx. 1.33 million KRW),[15] and the gross domestic product [GDP] was only $158 (approx. 180,000 KRW).[16]
In the early days, the Church of God was established as a house church. Christ Ahnsahnghong preached the truth of the new covenant in large cities such as Busan and Seoul, and even in rural villages and small towns along the seashore. He worked difficult jobs so that He could raise expenses for operating the church and for preaching. While preaching the gospel without rest, He wrote the Truth Books; Unsealing the Seven Thunders, Visitors From the Angelic World, The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the Gospel, The Law of Moses and the Law of Christ, The Last Plagues and the Seal of God, Explanations of the Trinity, and The Mystery of God and the Spring of the Water of Life. His devotion enabled the Church of God to grow from four branches in 1970 to thirteen branches in Korea by 1980.

Proclaimed God the Mother

Christ Ahnsahnghong proclaimed that God the Mother would appear at the end of 6,000-year work of God’s redemption. In the preface of His book, Unsealing the Seven Thunders (1955), He wrote: “There is one more person. She is still a child. She is to appear after me.” Christ Ahnsahnghong prophesied about the appearance of another Savior.

In 1980, He compiled all the truths and published the book, The Mystery of God and the Spring of the Water of Life. As for the six-day Creation written in Chapter 24, “The Complete and the Incomplete,” He interpreted the reality of the last Adam and the last Eve, who appeared on the sixth day, as the Spirit and the Bride in Revelation 22:17. In the chart that shows the six-day Creation as a prophecy of God's work of redemption, He wrote, “On the last day, the Spirit and the Bride will appear and lead all the animals [the Gentiles].” It was a prophecy that the Spirit and the Bride would come in human form at the end of the world and lead those who would be saved. The Spirit who gives the water of life refers to Second Coming Christ, that is, God the Father. The Bride who gives the water of life is God the Mother, Heavenly Jerusalem, the wife of the Lamb.[17][18]
Christ Ahnsahnghong focused on proclaiming God the Mother toward the end of His 37-year ministry. He taught His successor Pastor Joo-cheol Kim and some of His disciples about God the Mother. In His sermon notebooks, He wrote, “Elisha followed Elijah, Joshua followed Moses, Peter followed Jesus, and I follow Mother.” Many of His handwritten notebooks and sermon books testify about God the Mother.
On April 15, 1984, Christ Ahnsahnghong celebrated His last Passover on this earth. On that day, the Passover was held at a wedding hall, not at the church, with a lit blue candle and red candle. He officially revealed God the Mother at the ceremony. On May 18, 1984, Christ Ahnsahnghong and Heavenly Mother took ceremonial photos with a bouquet of carnations in Her hands, wearing wedding clothes; this was to make clear that She is God the Mother.

Ascended to Heaven in 1985

According to the prophecy, Christ Ahnsahnghong ascended to heaven on February 25, 1985 after finishing His 37-year ministry of the gospel. He foretold the death of Second Coming Christ through the media.

Dated March 18, 1981, with the title, “Unknown New Religion: The Church of God,” Weekly Religion reported as follows: Second Coming Jesus has to come to the earth in secret and pass away after preaching the gospel for 37 years. The Church of God believes that Second Coming Christ is to appear in this age and that he is to appear in the flesh with eyes, nose, mouth, and ears . . . because the new covenant He established at His first coming was abolished during the Dark Ages. So the Lord Himself has to come again to restore the truth of life, the new covenant . . .”
In preparation for His departure, He established the church order so that the Church of God would grow upright according to the teachings of God the Mother. In May 1984, He handed down His ceremonial gown to Pastor Joo-cheol Kim, proclaiming him as His successor, and entrusted him with the mission of preaching the gospel for the salvation of all mankind.

Major Teachings

Christ Ahnsahnghong reminded us of the gospel that Jesus established and that the apostles kept 2,000 years ago. It is only God the Holy Spirit who can restore the gospel that had been distorted since the Apostolic Age.

"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."

- John 14:26

In the 16th century, Martin Luther and many other reformers criticized the corruption of the Catholic Church and led the Reformation. However, none of them could restore the truth of the Apostolic Age. It is the same today; many church denominations around the world did not restore the truth. Ahnsahnghong is God the Holy Spirit, who completely restored the truth and faith of the early Church.

God the Mother

The Hebrew word Elohim (אֱלֹהִים), recorded about 2,500 times in the Old Testament, is a plural noun meaning God and refers to God the Father and God the Mother.
The Hebrew word Elohim (אֱלֹהִים), recorded about 2,500 times in the Old Testament, is a plural noun meaning God and refers to God the Father and God the Mother.

Many people think that there is only one God, the Father. However, God the Mother exists as well. From the book of Genesis, which records the Creation, to the book of Revelation which prophesies about the last days, the Bible repeatedly proves the existence of God the Mother. Christ Ahnsahnghong made known God the Mother through various testimonies in the Bible:God who is referred to as “us,”[20], male and female created in the image of God;[21] “our Mother” represented as the Heavenly Jerusalem;[22] the Wife prepared for the wedding banquet of the Lamb;[23] and the Bride who appears with the Spirit in the last days to give the water of life.[24] Just as all living things receive life through their mothers, our souls can receive eternal life through God the Mother.

New Covenant, the Law of Christ

There are two kinds of covenants in the Bible: the Old Covenant and the new covenant. The Old Covenant is the Law of Moses, which God Jehovah established through Moses on Mount Sinai[25] In the New Testament times, Jesus changed the Old Testament law into a perfect law—[26][27] the new covenant, the Law of Christ.[28]
All the commandments that Christ Ahnsahnghong taught are not the laws of the Old Testament, but the laws of life that leads to salvation—the new covenant that Jesus established 2,000 years ago.

Passover

The Holy Supper of the Passover well-known as the Last Supper

The key commandment of the new covenant is the Passover, which Jesus kept with the bread and wine representing His flesh and blood.[29] The Passover of the new covenant promises the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.[30][31]
The Passover is a feast that means “Disasters pass over.” The Israelites, who had been slaves in Egypt in the Old Testament times, kept the Passover with the blood of a lamb, and escaped the plague and were liberated from Egypt.[32] Jesus, who came as the reality of the Passover lamb in the New Testament times, was sacrificed on the cross for the salvation of all mankind.[33] Those who keep the Passover of the new covenant will be protected from disasters through the precious blood of Christ and will enter the kingdom of heaven.

The seven feasts in three times are annual feasts based on the Old and New Testaments. The seven feasts are divided into three times. The first time is the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread; the second time is the Day of Firstfruits [Day of Resurrection] and the Feast of Weeks [Pentecost], and the third time is the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles. These feasts originated from the work of Moses and prophesy about the work of Jesus to be fulfilled in the New Testament times.[34][35] The feasts contain God’s blessings such as the forgiveness of sins, eternal life, resurrection, and the Holy Spirit.

  • Passover: Evening of the 14th day of the first month by the sacred calendar, the Holy Supper of Jesus.
  • Feast of Unleavened Bread: The 15th day of the first month by the sacred calendar, the feast commemorating the suffering of Jesus on the cross
  • Day of Resurrection [Day of Firstfruits]: The day (Sunday) after the first Sabbath following the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the anniversary of the resurrection of Jesus, the Day of Firstfruits in the Old Testament
  • Pentecost [Feast of Weeks]: The 50th day (Sunday) after the Day of Resurrection, the day of celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit, the Feast of Weeks in the Old Testament
  • Feast of Trumpets: The 1st day of the seventh month by the sacred calendar, the feast to prepare for the Day of Atonement through repentance
  • Day of Atonement: The 10th day of the seventh month by the sacred calendar, the feast to receive atonement for the sins committed the past year
  • Feast of Tabernacles: From the 15th day to the 22nd day of the seventh month by the sacred calendar, the feast of preaching according to the example of Christ, the descent of the Holy Spirit

Sabbath

The Bible, the record of God’s laws and covenants
The Bible, the record of God’s laws and covenants

The Sabbath is the commemoration day of the Creator, who made all things for six days and rested on the seventh day. Based on the Bible and historical facts, the Sabbath corresponds to Saturday in today’s seven-day system.

After the Creation in six days, God made the seventh-day Sabbath holy and proclaimed it as the fourth of the Ten Commandments in the time of Moses.[36][37] In the New Testament times, Jesus kept the Sabbath (on Saturday) as His custom.[38] Even after the Crucifixion, the early Church kept the Sabbath holy.[39] Today, most churches worship on Sunday, the first day of the week, but Christ Ahnsahnghong taught the seventh-day Sabbath as the worship day according to the Bible.

Baptism

Baptism is a ceremony in which the body of sin is buried under water and reborn into a new life.[40] The word baptism is derived from Greek βαπτισμα[41] meaning “washing, dipping.” Considering the etymology of the original Greek term, baptism should be conducted by immersion, not just by sprinkling with water. The Church of God conducts baptism as taught by Christ Ahnsahnghong.

Baptism is a sign of salvation, which is promised by God.[42] The baptism that leads to salvation should be conducted in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,[43] and with faith in God and the gospel.[44]

Women’s Veil

The book of 1 Corinthians 11 shows God's will concerning women's veil. In the early Church, men wore nothing on their heads during prayer or worship while women covered their heads.[45] This regulation is based on the example of Christ,[46] contains God’s providence of the Creation, and was established for the order of the Church. Apostle Paul clarified that women's veil was a common practice not only in Corinth but also in all the Churches of God.[47]
In most Protestant churches today, women do not put a veil on their heads as men do not. In the Catholic Church, high-ranking male clergy put a skullcap or a hat on their heads during Mass. Apostle Paul defined this as an act of dishonoring God against the standards of the Bible.[45]

The New Command Is Love

Love is the first and greatest commandment in the Bible.[48] Christ Ahnsahnghong taught that the new covenant, which was established with the Passover bread and wine, is the way to fulfill the command of love.
When Jesus established the new covenant with the Passover,[49] He gave the new command, “Love one another as I have loved you,”[50] during the Holy Supper of the Passover. The new covenant and the new command are essentially the same.[51] Those who participate in the flesh and blood of Jesus through the new covenant Passover become one in Christ.[52] The new covenant Passover is a ceremony that enables us to eat the bread and wine representing Jesus’ flesh and blood and to realize the love and sacrifice of Christ who sacrificed Himself on the cross for the salvation of mankind. This is how believers can realize the love of Christ and put into practice the new command, “Love one another.”

Soul

A person is composed of the body and the soul.[53] When a person dies, the body and the soul do not perish together; the body returns to the ground and the soul returns to God.[54] Even before being born in the flesh, all human souls existed in heaven as angels. Christ Ahnsahnghong taught where our souls came from, why we are living on this earth, and where we will return. He taught that the way for us, who are confined in the body and live a temporary life, to return to heaven is the new covenant Passover, which contains the atoning sacrifice of Christ.[55]

The World Mission Society Church of God was founded by Christ Ahnsahnghong in 1964. The church has inherited the original practices of the early Church established by Jesus and attended by the apostles such as Peter, John, and Paul 2,000 years ago. It has grown to become a global church with 7,500 churches in 175 countries within 50 years of its establishment. The church contributes to its neighbors, communities, and countries through diverse volunteer services according to the word of God, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Name

Christ Jesus established a church with His own blood 2,000 years ago.[56] The name of the church that Jesus established and that the apostles attended is the Church of God.[57][58] The name means, “the church established by God,” and “the church of which the owner is God.” According to the words, “the church established with God’s own blood,”[59] the Church of God is the only church that keeps the new covenant Passover which contains the precious blood of God.[60]

Truth and Faith

The Church of God inherited the name, truth, and faith of the early Church. According to the teachings of Christ Ahnsahnghong, the Church of God keeps the truth of the new covenant such as the seven feasts in three times (including the Passover), the Sabbath, baptism, and women's veil. The members believe in Ahnsahnghong the Christ who came a second time according to the prophecies of the Bible, and God the Mother, putting Their teachings into practice. They also aim to accomplish the mission of the last religious reformation by preaching the perfect truth established by Christ.

World Evangelism

The Church of God started as a house church in Busan, Korea. By the dedication and sacrifice of Christ Ahnsahnghong, the gospel gradually spread to the metropolitan area and throughout the country. After Christ Ahnsahnghong finished His 37-year ministry, the church has devotedly preached the gospel of the new covenant and practiced God’s love, following the guidance of God the Mother. As a result, the number of registered members reached 10,000 in 1988 and 100,000 in 1996.

World evangelism, which is the mission of Christians, began in the 1990s. Before Jesus went up to heaven 2,000 years ago, He gave His last command to His disciples on the Mount of Olives: “Make disciples of all nations, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Mt 28:19–20).[61][62] Christ Ahnsahnghong too taught that the truth of salvation should be preached to all nations of the world.[63] According to His teachings, the Church of God has spurred the world mission, and now there are more than 7,500 churches in 175 countries throughout the world. In the 2000s, overseas members began to visit Korea in earnest. As of July 2019, an average of 1,500 overseas members visited Korea annually.[64]

Volunteerism

The Church of God puts into practice the love and sacrifice of Christ Ahnsahnghong throughout the world. The church provides emergency relief, medical and well-being support, blood donation, and environmental preservation activities for global neighbors suffering from disasters, hunger, diseases, and poverty, and gives courage and hope to them in various fields such as cultural communication and character education.[65] Governments, institutions, and all walks of life have presented a total of more than 3,300 awards including medals, citations, and achievement awards for the sincere volunteer service of the Church of God.[66]
